Nosa Orobaton, MD, DrPH, MPH, MBA

Dr. Nosa Orobaton is the former Principal Officer, Health, Africa Regional Office at the Gates foundation. In this role and previously as Senior Advisor, he was responsible for leading the work on research capacity building in Africa’s universities and research institutions, and in enabling the scale-up of proven MNCH innovations via country primary health care systems and levers in Northern Nigeria and elsewhere in Africa. He is a medical doctor with specialization in public health and health systems management and has worked in clinical medicine and public health for 40 years. Dr. Orobaton is the current Chair, Charter Committee of GWU’s Atlantic Fellows Health Equity program. He is a member of the Editorial Board of Frontiers in Global Women’s Health journal. He spearheaded the introduction of Chlorhexidine for newborn cord care in Africa in 2013-14, which began in Nigeria—now in use by over 1 million births annually.

Prior to joining the Foundation, he was Director of Operations at the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria where he managed a $10 billion portfolio of grants in 143 countries. He also worked as Deputy Executive Director at WHO’s Health Metrics Network and successfully raised $1 billion via Global Health Agencies, to enable countries to strengthen their health systems. Dr Orobaton has worked in Africa, Asia and South and Central America, and has published several papers on public health. He also worked for John Snow, Inc, where we led USAID-funded, country-based work across Sub-Saharan Africa estimated at ~$400M. He holds a medical degree from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, a master’s and doctoral degrees in public health from Johns Hopkins University, and an MBA from University of Maryland University College, USA.
