Bio

Joanne Chiwaula is a nurse-midwife and nonprofit founder. After witnessing the “inevitable” death of a newborn following the death of his mother and the prolonged recovery of many women who nearly escaped death during difficult deliveries, Joanne founded Joyful Motherhood in Malawi. Joyful Motherhood improves infant survival among high-risk babies and the health-related quality of life of women following “near-miss” deliveries through family-based care.

Joanne graduated from Brown University with a B.A. in International Development, obtained her MSc from the University of California, San Francisco, and became a Certified Nurse-Midwife. She has attended birthing women in the US, Bolivia, Ghana and Malawi. She taught nursing and midwifery at KNUST in Ghana and worked at a community clinic in Texas serving low-income immigrant women. Joanne is driven by a desire to serve women who often find quality care in scarce supply.
