Bio

Dr. Sarah Battistich an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at New York University Medical Center, where she has also served as the Medical Director for the Bellevue/NYU Survivors of Torture Program. In this role she oversaw the program’s uniquely comprehensive medical and mental health care, as well as social and legal services to survivors of torture and war trauma.

Sarah received her Bachelor of Arts in International Development from the University of California, Los Angeles, and her Medical Doctorate from the University of Michigan Medical School. She completed her residency in Emergency Medicine at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, and her fellowship in Global Health and International Emergency Medicine at Yale University. She also received her Masters of Science in Tropical Medicine from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and her Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene from the same institution.

After training, Sarah served as the primary investigator assessing the use of an evidence-based decision tool for diagnosing tuberculosis in patients living with HIV/AIDS in Johannesburg, South Africa. She has worked extensively in post-conflict health reconstruction in Monrovia, Liberia, as well as in health initiatives in Haiti, Ghana, South Africa, and Indonesia. She is certified by the International Committee of the Red Cross and the World Health Organization in “Health Emergencies in Large Populations.”
